A CAPRICCIO OF AN ITALIAN LANDSCAPE

Gustav Friedrich Papperitz
(German, 1813-1861)

A capriccio of an Italian landscape
oil on canvas
37 1/2 by 53 1/2 in. (95.3 by 136 cm.)

Painted in 1853. Signed and dated ‘Papperitz 1853’ (lower left).

While we have maintained the descriptive title of the painting as it was presented in 2002 at Christie’s, the scene, and the artists’s origin would indicate that the painting depicts a capriccio view of the Heidelberg castle and town in Germany.
